Louisiana Man Sentenced for Horrific Crimes at Golden Nugget Casino
Stephen Douglas Cormier, a Louisiana man, has been sentenced to 99 years in prison for a heinous crime committed at the Golden Nugget Casino in St. Charles, La. He was convicted in 2023 of second-degree sexual battery, second-degree kidnapping, and mingling harmful substances. Cormier’s attempt to reduce his sentence was recently denied by the 3rd Circuit Appellate Panel, despite his claims that a video found on his phone prejudiced the jury against him.
The Horrific Incident
The incident occurred on October 5, 2021, when Cormier met his victim, identified as “E.M.,” at the Golden Nugget Casino. Surveillance video from the casino showed Cormier buying shots at the bar, spiking one of them, and giving it to E.M. to drink. Shortly after consuming the drink, E.M. became disoriented and was driven to a friend’s house by Cormier. There, he sexually assaulted her, taking pictures of the vile act.
Shocking Revelations
E.M.’s boyfriend and mother later found her in a dazed and lethargic state in her car at the casino’s parking garage. A subsequent sexual assault examination revealed the extent of the trauma she had endured. Police discovered images of the assault on Cormier’s phone, along with a disturbing video of him assaulting another victim who appeared unconscious and non-consenting.
Legal Battle and Denial
Cormier’s lawyers argued that the video of the second victim should not have been shown at trial as it prejudiced the jury. They claimed there was no evidence of non-consensual acts in the video. However, the 3rd Circuit Appellate Panel disagreed, stating that the video showcased Cormier’s willingness to commit heinous acts similar to those he was accused of in the first victim’s case.
This devastating case highlights the importance of justice and accountability in cases of sexual assault and abuse. It serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and awareness in ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals, especially in vulnerable situations like those in a casino setting. Let us all stand united against such atrocities and work towards creating a safer and more secure environment for everyone.
