Nevada’s 49 delegates have unanimously decided to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for President at the upcoming Democratic National Convention. This decision comes after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race, leading to a need for swift consolidation of support for Harris.
During a Monday night call, delegates from Nevada, including superdelegates such as senators, members of Congress, and the attorney general, all agreed to throw their support behind Harris. Nevada Democrats Chair Daniele Monroe-Moreno expressed that Vice President Harris has a deep understanding of Nevada, being the first battleground state she visited this year. It is believed that Harris has played a crucial role in the historic progress made by the Biden administration.
Nevada now joins other states like Tennessee, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and South Carolina in declaring their intention to back Harris at the convention. Additionally, the majority of Florida delegates have also pledged their support to Harris.
Initially, all 49 of Nevada’s delegates were pledged to Biden following his landslide victory in the state’s primary in February. However, with Biden stepping down and releasing his delegates, they are now free to support any nominee who can secure the backing of at least 300 delegates at the convention. While the state party is still awaiting guidance from the Democratic National Committee, this move by Nevada’s delegates brings Harris closer to the 1,976 delegates needed to secure the nomination. According to the Washington Post, Harris has reportedly reached this threshold as of Monday night.
Nevada’s delegation comprises a diverse group of elected officials, party volunteers, and local leaders, including the state’s senators, House members, state legislators, and the state party chair – all of whom endorsed Harris on Sunday. With no other major candidates challenging Harris at this point, she is on track to officially become the party’s nominee at the convention in Chicago, set to begin on August 19th. The support from Nevada’s delegates adds to the momentum behind Harris’s candidacy as she aims to secure the Democratic nomination for President.
