The window for prioritized license applications in Brazil has officially closed after receiving a total of 113 requests from operators eager to establish a presence in the largest market in Latin America. The deadline of August 20 has passed, with 113 operators submitting their applications within the 90-day initial window of preference, which opened in May. These operators will now ensure that their applications are processed in time for the anticipated legal market launch on January 1, 2025.
The final regulations were published on July 31, which included the much-awaited Normative Ordinance No 1,207 that clarified the types of online games that would be permitted. Out of the 113 applications received, 108 were submitted between the publication of the regulations and the deadline.
Industry expert Neil Montgomery sees the high number of applications as a positive sign for the Brazilian government. He mentioned to iGB that the significant interest from operators indicates that the government has successfully attracted a large number of players to the regulated market. This bodes well for the government’s tax revenue targets, showing that they are moving in the right direction.
The interest from operators in securing licenses in Brazil reflects the growing importance of the Latin American market in the global gaming industry. With Brazil being the largest economy in the region and a population of over 200 million, the potential for growth and revenue generation is immense. Operators are looking to capitalize on this opportunity and establish a strong presence in the Brazilian market before the official launch of legal operations in 2025.
The regulations set forth by the Brazilian government aim to create a fair and transparent licensing process that will ensure a level playing field for all operators. By providing clarity on the types of games that will be allowed, the government is signaling its commitment to fostering a responsible and sustainable gaming industry in the country.
As the deadline for license applications has passed, operators will now await the processing of their requests and prepare for the official launch of the regulated market in Brazil. With the high level of interest and anticipation surrounding the market opening, the gaming industry in Brazil is poised for significant growth and development in the coming years.
