Residents in Las Vegas are facing high electricity costs due to the scorching temperatures reaching up to 120 degrees. Many locals, like Jose Alvarez, are feeling the financial burden of keeping their homes cool to avoid health issues or triggers like seizures.
Alvarez, who suffers from epilepsy, shared that keeping his apartment cool is a top priority to manage his condition. However, this means higher electric bills, especially during the summer months. He has seen his monthly bill rise from $250 to a projected $275, and he is not alone. A study revealed that customers in Nevada are experiencing an average increase of $100.05 on their electric bills, making the total average cost $681.21 a month during the summer season.
The increase in electric bills is largely attributed to the rising energy consumption by customers trying to stay cool in the extreme heat. Antoine Tilmon from NV Energy explained that the spike in bills is a result of higher energy usage, especially for air conditioning units. While rates were lowered from July to September, customers are still facing expensive bills due to increased energy consumption.
To help manage costs, Tilmon suggests setting the thermostat at 78 degrees, using ceiling or desk fans to circulate air, and avoiding the use of larger appliances during peak hours to reduce heat production in the home. Additionally, NV Energy offers programs for vulnerable populations like the elderly or those with medical conditions to assist them in managing their electricity costs.
