New York Assemblyman Joseph Giglio is calling on Governor Kathy Hochul to expedite negotiations for a new gaming compact with the Seneca Nation. Giglio, who has represented the region where three Seneca Nation gaming properties are located since 2015, is a strong advocate for reaching a new agreement that benefits both the tribe and the local economy.

The previous gaming compact between the Seneca Nation and the state of New York expired in December 2022, leading to the tribe placing 25% of its slot revenue into an escrow account. Despite a tentative agreement reached last year for a new 20-year compact that included a reduced slot tax rate and the possibility of a tribal casino in Rochester, negotiations have since stalled.

Giglio emphasizes the importance of a fair deal that allows the Seneca Nation to support local towns that rely on gaming revenue while also securing the tribe’s economic future. The impact of Seneca Nation casinos on the Western New York economy is significant, generating over $1 billion annually and employing thousands of people, the majority of whom are non-natives.

With the State Legislature adjourned for the year, the possibility of a special session being called by Governor Hochul to approve a new gaming compact remains. Despite his impending retirement from public service, Giglio is committed to advocating for a swift resolution to the negotiations for the benefit of all stakeholders in Western New York.

In the meantime, the expired compact has been automatically extended on a quarterly basis, with the next extension scheduled for July 1. This ongoing extension underscores the urgency of reaching a new agreement to provide stability for the Seneca Nation and the surrounding communities.

As discussions continue between the Seneca Nation and state officials, the need for a comprehensive and mutually beneficial gaming compact remains a top priority. The economic impact of the Seneca Nation’s gaming operations cannot be understated, making it essential for both parties to come to the table in good faith and work towards a resolution that supports the region’s prosperity and growth.
