This year, we were excited about the prospect of hosting a televised U.S. Senate debate at our annual conference, IndyFest. We had successfully organized a gubernatorial debate at our 2022 event and were looking forward to a similar event this year. However, it seems that this debate will not be taking place after all.
I extended invitations to both candidates, and Republican Sam Brown promptly accepted. On the other hand, Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen’s team initially indicated that she would be available for a debate in mid-October. However, they later began to lay out a series of conditions. They insisted that the debate must be televised live, which we could not guarantee, although it would be broadcast on the same day or shortly thereafter, as was the case with the gubernatorial debate. They also requested that there be no live audience, a condition I personally agree with, as it reduces the likelihood of disruptions during the debate. The Rosen team went on to demand that the debate be televised in two languages, which was beyond our ability to provide.
Despite assurances from Team Rosen that they would provide a full list of conditions, they never followed through. Instead, I received an email stating that they had decided to pursue other options after reviewing invitations from different hosts. While I respect their decision, I believe that voters deserve the opportunity to witness a debate between the two candidates vying for a crucial Senate seat.
Although Team Rosen has chosen not to participate in our debate, I am committed to honoring our invitation to Sam Brown, who will be attending IndyFest. We will soon be announcing his appearance publicly, and I am eager to interview him at the event. I sincerely hope that Sen. Rosen reconsiders her decision not to participate, as the invitation remains open for her to join the debate.
In the meantime, I look forward to the possibility of another media outlet hosting a Senate debate that meets Team Rosen’s requirements. It is essential for voters to have the chance to see a face-off between the candidates in one of the most significant Senate races in the country.
