Good morning, this is Rocio Hernandez, bringing you the latest education news in Nevada. Today, I want to share a heartwarming story about a Henderson teen who is making a big difference in the lives of seniors.
During the pandemic, Green Valley High School senior Mischa Abad noticed how social distancing measures were making it hard for seniors to connect with their families. Inspired to make a difference, she founded a nonprofit called Uplifting Deliveries in 2021.
Uplifting Deliveries aims to combat social isolation among seniors by delivering handmade cards and care packages. Since its inception, the nonprofit has made an incredible 16,000 deliveries to senior homes and hospices in the Las Vegas Valley. One woman even shared that the card she received was the only present under her tree that year.
In addition to spreading cheer through deliveries, Uplifting Deliveries hosts workshops for students to teach them about leadership and community service. They also organize events at senior living homes where residents can enjoy activities like yoga, dance, and music.
Mischa Abad’s dedication to helping seniors has not gone unnoticed. She plans to expand the nonprofit’s reach to Southern California and rural Nevada. After high school, she hopes to study neuroscience and pursue a career in geriatric medicine.

In other news, the Clark County School Board has decided to push back its superintendent search timeline due to a vacancy on the board and upcoming elections. This delay will allow newly elected trustees to settle into their positions before the interview process begins in mid-February.
